Track Review: WILD- Troye Sivan ft. Alessia Cara (remix)
WILD was the first single off of Troye’s “Blue Neighborhood” album and was of course one of my favorites on the whole thing. I listen to it almost daily, so when I saw on Twitter last week that Troye and Alessia would be releasing a remix of it, I knew it would be something special. Alessia’s album wasn’t the best thing I’ve ever heard, but she’s one of the most interesting new figures in Pop music today. Just so young, and such an incredible innovator.
WILD
I haven’t reviewed the original version, but I feel like if you’re reading this, you’ve probably already heard it so I don’t feel like I need to go into detail or anything. The song starts off with Troye’s original first verse and chorus, before Alessia comes in at around the 1:10 mark. Immediately, you feel a change in dynamic. She takes command right away, singing “We’re alike you and I. Two blue hearts locked in our wrong minds”. Behind her, a bubbly Woodpecker-like beat (that may or may not have been in the original version and if it was I’m sorry for not picking up on it…maybe it’s just enhanced here. Not complaining) bounces around and completely changes the tempo and vibe of the song without actually changing anything. I especially love the “Can you help me leave my demons and my broken pieces behind” line…just very poignant and completely fitting for this song.
They sing the chorus together, with Alessia breaking off from the original melody at just the right times, like on “Never knew loving could hurt this good” and has a nice riff down on “Oh”. Troye’s tone is soft yet striking, and her voice compliments it nicely. She could have easily overpowered him but she reigned it in, again showing her prowess at such a young age. I wish she would have had more to do on the bridge, as with Troye, the little breaks or whatever she wanted to do with her voice would have been clearly audible. Another voice added to this song really blocks out the voices of the children, which is a plus in itself. She’s an excellent addition to this track, and I’m really happy it seems to be doing well. Currently #14 on ITunes, Alessia’s assist clearly aided in the tracks resurgence.
Really loving this. Would love to see them perform it together when I go see Troye live at Terminal 5 in NYC in a few months.
