Track Review: Youth- Troye Sivan

My first exposure to Troye Sivan was his YouTube cover of Declan Galbraith’s “Tell Me Why” a VERY long time ago. Now he’s a YouTube and LGTB icon of sorts, and just a few months ago released his debut full-length album titled “Blue Neighborhood” off of Capital Records.

Youth

Youth is an electro-pop track and is the 3rd single off of “Blue Neighborhood”, but has probably garnered the most attention of the singles thus far. He performed the track on the Ellen DeGeneres Show in late January 2016, and the music video was released in late February to generally positive reviews, with Fifth Harmony’s Camila Cabello calling it “ethereal and dreamlike”. The latter being how I would describe the verses of this track, which finds Troye asking questions like “What if, what if we left today? What if, what if we run away?”, almost as if he’s sitting in bed thinking about it himself as he tries to live in the moment as a young person. He sings “When the lights start flashing like a photo booth. And the lights exploding, we’ll be fireproof”, almost challenging his  listeners to come out with him and be young and free while they can. The chorus of this track is fun, loud, and something you’d expect to hear at a high school social gathering or even on a club dance floor. Booming drum hits, a production riff that is catchy as hell, and a choir of children accompanying Troye dominate, and helps make this song a really great addition to a party playlist and even on radio. He sings”The truth so loud you can’t ignore my youth. My youth is yours”. Make mistakes while your young with the people you love and don’t be afraid to go out and experience new things. The perfect message for Troye’s demographic.
